The Sapling
Добавлен 28 окт 2018
I'm working on evolution simulation game The Sapling, my solo indie game project. It's a game where you can basically do two types of things: on the one hand, there are a number of scenarios tasking you to design an ecosystem that meets specific requirements, on the other there is a sandbox where you can build your own plants and animals, turn on 'random mutations', and see how they evolve.
Island evolution: diverging paths (🧬Evolution Simulated #6)
Another video in the 'Evolution Simulated' series, showcasing simulation videogame The Sapling, where we follow one planet for a longer time. We study all the ecosystems that all evolve, and how they change over time.

Are there any plans to add body types for Crustaceans or other Arthropods or Mollusks.
The root over hall got me thinking about the plant system. IRL there are plants with roots that don't attack themselves to soil, and just float in the water. I think it would be cool to have some duckweed like plants covering the water surface.
THE COCONUT NUT IS A GUD GUD NUT, BUT THIS VERY GOOD NUT IS NOT A NUT.
There should be invertebrates too an invertebrates editor
Sometimes the camera controls bug out, even when im not pressing a button it randomly starts moving in one direction,is this a feature or a bug?
Could you pls Get the sapling on PS5 or ps4
I have a new idea what if you reply the dinosaur and ket the world to play for 250 milion years how they will evolve
The better Spore.
0:37 uh this only happens if the planet has 0 axial tilt, in which case seasons cannot exist
an intelligent mutations would be great! so they could live longer or research stuff to improve the colony.
Whens the next video
Boom! Back At it! 🤓 I wish I could do This for a living! One thing I notice about your plants is that they end up very 'Stem-ey'. Seeing the process, I think I can twig why. 😁 The key is in How plants (on Earth) grow. The fundamental form of a plant is the LEAF. Or, the squishy New Green bit that transpires oxygen and co2, and turns light into energy. Just a 'leaf' is Algae. 'Leaf' and 'connecting tissue' (root) build ocean mats and seaweeds. On Land, One 'Leaf' and One 'Connecting Tissue' is Grass which can also create 'mats' of many 'leaves' alone, sharing 'connecting tissue'. Upon 'fulfillment' 'leaves' can either begin a build task at a node, or move the 'node' outward by hardening the first 'leaf' into 'stem', and sprouting a New 'Leaf' at its end.. 'Stem' material is therefore created From a 'Leaf' structure having been there First. What is more, any Future growth necessarily originates from a node where a leaf once was, and extension of node locations is accomplished by the Forward Motion of a 'leaf component' Alone. By thinking in Stems, you’ve kinda done it in reverse. The Leaf is the foundation of the thing. Of Course, I can Also Dig how leaves would kinda Melt even the best processors… 🤷♂😁👍
Backseat Peanut Gallery again… The one piece I see, or rather Don’t see here, is the Tail. The primary use of the tail is to provide Stability and Control… particularly in the Turning, or side-to-side motion… Both to respond Quickly and Effectively when Wanted, and to control any Drift caused by the Instability of lacking one. (Bats use their hind feet to contort the trailing edge) (pterosaurs used their crested heads, the big weirdos) I would be tempted to introduce a certain inherent unpredictable instability to 'Flight' as a rule, whose effects are decreased by better and better tails. What is more, the quality of a tail could determine the Turning Radius and responsiveness of changes in direction. Thus, gliding and simple flight would allow for mobility, but tail development would give control over Destination, and Advanced Tails would allow for the sorts of 'dogfights' that allow for predators… Bigger wings - further glide, more efficient, slower to start Smaller wings - faster, uses more energy, quick responsiveness NO tail - slowly slips sideways to the ground, No control after takeoff Simple tail - steering to determine path, pick landing spot Advanced tail - agility to pursue other animals in flight, eat while still flying
Years later… 🙄 It would seem the Size to heat variable would be Best calculated as a ratio of volume to surface area. Thus, even More varied results could arise with features like flaps or wrinkles meant Only to expand Surface Area and aid cooling. Likewise a push to minimize extremities and absorb limbs into a fleshy mass would increase heat retention. Absolutely Brilliant Work! I have no computer to handle it, my iPad is my best, but I would Love to help any way I can, and I LOVE Watching Any Content Exploring an iteration! Keep the Episodes Coming!!!
In addition, by allowing 'surface area' to be adjusted by approximate Actual Exposed Area, you create the possibility for behaviors like 'curling up' or tucking tail and legs inward to retain heat… If this includes other objects, you incentivize 'huddling against' objects for 'Shelter', or even assembling into Groups for warmth. Similarly, heat would encourage ‘Sprawling Out' Avoiding Tight Spaces, and the close proximity of many animals at once. 🤓
I wish i could get this game its so fun and cool is it available on OPPO F11?
it would be awesome if you could just leave it alone and animals would naturally evolve from plants
I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT THIS GAME TURNS INTO BRO I JUST BOUGHT IT SIMPLY TO SHOW SUPPORT THE CONCEPT IS COOL
another good video of da saplin
Any tips on getting the game to run better?
Bro you gotta continue this
Will there be a feature that shows the range of a particular species from a zoomed out view in the future? Love the game, I think it has a lot of potential!
Range as in where it lives most often? Without making promises, it's an idea I like!
🤫🧏♂️
Remember that time when he said he would never add grass
sshhh
In love with this game May I suggest: Pack animals Small tribes/civilizations (idk could be a bad idea) Egg defense and egg abatement Migration behavior And last but not least UPRIGHT ANIMALS
*abandoning/abandonment
Without making promises, all ideas I like :)
@@TheSapling OMG YOU RESPONDED AND YOU LIKE MY IDEAS <3 I really love this game :3
WOOOOOOO NEW STUFF
Can animal (without eyes and other only 1 lv leg and mouth) and plants leave water without help
I mean that a question
Highly depends on the planet; if you want help here, the players of the Steam forums are expert on this! :)
Here me out… Multiplayer mode You both make a species and every 100 years you can mutate it similar to the scenario levels and whoever goes extinct last wins; maybe also add the ability to set a limit to how long it can go on
It's an interesting idea! I guess the first step would be the ability to export and load creatures, so players can do it 'unofficially'
I tried game is the best gameplay I ever see but I am still don't start sandbox wonder how good is sandbox
The sandbox will unlock after the first scenario! :)
can you add a flower growing into fruit or players can do a anatomy of creatures plisss
pliss do parasites
Have I been pronouncing "algae" wrong this whole time?
forvo.com/search/algae/ ;)
@@TheSapling Interesting, Id trust your pronunciation over mine since you're the biology expert. I guess both ways are right.
These videos got me to go and buy the game, so great idea! My computer which I thought was pretty decent can't render more than, like, 200 creatures on the planet at a time. So it's a shame I can't really enjoy the sandbox very much. But I'm still liking the game. This map you featured has a really unique layout, I assume it was bespoke for this stream you did. Is there a way to get maps like that for sandbox on our end?
This is actually the sandbox map before the players could edit it ;). Also, I'm continuously working on optimization, hopefully your machine will be able to run more populous maps later!
Game name?
The Sapling :)
Idea:make a place when you can see creatures based on what they eat
*milk,*
What if heavier creatures can climb but only onto wood like plants
What If creature could use tools? Similar to ravens or otters Also I could be wrong but do plants always grow the same way or can they branch out differently then the others of there species
Nope it's just the same model rotated differently ;)
I love the projet and its really nice and love the game, I also wanted to ask, how do you get the frozen planet type thing?
Just lower the temperature ;)
I just watched a Curious Archive vid that featured this game! I’m gonna get it pretty soon, can’t wait to play
These videos were a great idea, easily sold me on this game. Went and bought it after watching a few
I love this game. Here are some suggestions! 1.Editable wings, legs, and arms, just like seeds. 2.Hunting in packs 3. Different sandbox scenarios: what if animals had to survive after a nuke or something? 4. More playable platforms: this game is phenomenal and I love playing it, and the people I introduced it to love it as well. I’m sure this game will gain more of a fan base if it was supported on more platforms. Thank you!
Thanks so much for your feedback, much appreciated!
8:46 the guy in the back got meatified lol

Really love the game but have a bug that does not let my worlds go past 63,000 years old.
If you still have a savegame that does not go pass 63k, would you be willing to send it to me via thesaplinggame@gmail.com? I'd love to know what causes your problem; perhaps it's a bug I can fix :)
In addition to simply putting caps on organisms, a more immersive way of controlling overpopulation and increasing competition all while probably making the game run smoother would be through diseases. The greater the concentration of one species in an area, the greater the risk of contagion. The likelihood of the diseases to jump species also increases with concentration, so you can essentially hide the species cap inside this mechanic. This would incentivise all species to find ways to spread and diversify more quickly, punish animals that are too reliant on a single food source and generally prevent too many plateau states.
Thank you for this insight <3
@@TheSapling Thanks man, I love what you're doing :)
I would love to play it but I only have 4 gb of RAM
